Text Any textual data included in the document Soledad Acosta Kemble nació en Bogotá el 5 de mayo de 1833. Hija única de Joaquín Acosta y Carolina Kemble, recibió la doble influencia de un padre colombiano, científico e historiador, y una madre anglosajona. Ello marcó, de un lado, su formación y su visión del mundo, su curiosidad enciclopédica y su sed de conocimientos, su interés por la historia y su amor por la ciencia y por los libros. Esta doble influencia incidió también en su educación religiosa, en un hogar formado por un padre católico y una madre protestante; a pesar de los esfuerzos de la abuela materna por convertirla al protestantismo, la autora a temprana edad optó por el catolicismo, que era la religión de su entorno. Tenía cinco años cuando la familia viajó a Quito debido al nombramiento del coronel Acosta como Encargado de Negocios de la Nueva Granada ante el gobierno de Ecuador. A los nueve años viajó a Estados Unidos y Canadá, donde vivió varios meses con su abuela materna en Halifax. Tenía trece años cuando se trasladó con su familia a París y fue enviada al colegio. La familia regresó a Colombia en 1849, donde Joaquín Acosta falleció en 1852. En 1853 Soledad Acosta conoció al escritor y político colombiano José María Samper, encuentro que dio origen a la escritura de su diario, primer documento con el que contamos para hacer el seguimiento de su trayectoria escritural y que se interrumpió el 4 de mayo de 1855, la víspera de su matrimonio. La familia Samper Acosta viajó a Europa en 1858 y se radicó primero en Londres y luego en París. Allí la autora se inició en la escritura pública, como correspondiente –lo que hoy llamamos corresponsal– de periódicos de Bogotá y de Lima, a los cuales envió sus corresponsalías firmando con los seudónimos de Andina y Bertilda. Fue entonces cuando comenzó su labor como periodista, que la acompañaría siempre. De regreso en Bogotá en 1864, además de entregar sus traducciones y crónicas a los periódicos, comenzó a publicar relatos de ficción. Publicó dos novelas y cinco relatos breves (aparecidos entre 1864 y 1869), los primeros de las veintisiete novelas y numerosos cuadros que escribiría a lo largo de su vida. Su interés por los temas históricos afloró también en esos años, y tomó protagonismo a partir de 1878 cuando comenzaron a predominar las novelas históricas. En 1883, al hacerse historiadora, afirmó “que la vida, desnuda de toda trama novelesca bastaba para interesar al lector y surtía todos los efectos de un cuadro histórico-novelesco” (Biografías de hombres ilustres). Como historiadora escribió numerosas biografías, estudios históricos y dos manuales de historia patria, mientras escribía, simultáneamente, sobre temas de religión y continuaba escribiendo sobre la situación de las mujeres, haciendo traducciones y escribiendo ficción. La escritora fue también editora y empresaria editorial. Fundó y dirigió cinco revistas: La Mujer (1878), La Familia (1884), El Domingo de la Familia Cristiana (1889), El Domingo (1898) y Lecturas para el hogar (1905). También creó las colecciones Biblioteca del Hogar (1902), de la cual solo circuló el primer número, y Biblioteca Histórica, en 1909. En 1891, a raíz de la muerte de su esposo en 1888, doña Soledad –como era entonces conocida– viajó a Europa en compañía de su madre y de sus hijas y se instaló en París. Allí, según su biógrafo Santiago Samper Trainer “se sostuvo con sus escritos y sus traducciones” y con el producto de su actividad comercial como comisionista; enviaba mercancía a negocios establecidos en Colombia, al mismo tiempo que escribía para revistas españolas. Preparó cuatro escritos para presentar en los congresos que se celebraron en España con ocasión del cuarto centenario del descubrimiento de América, en los cuales participó representando a Colombia en 1892. Al regresar a su país en 1896, continuó al frente de proyectos editoriales de carácter historiográfico con motivo del Centenario de la Independencia. Soledad Acosta de Samper fue reconocida por sus contemporáneos como periodista, novelista e historiadora. Pero después de su muerte en Bogotá, el 17 de marzo de 1913, su nombre casi desapareció de los anales de la literatura, la historiografía y el periodismo nacionales. En la última década del siglo XX se despertó el interés académico por la escritora colombiana y su obra reapareció en el escenario colombiano e internacional gracias al trabajo de investigadoras e investigadores, inicialmente de los estudios literarios. El año 2013 fue declarado “Año Soledad Acosta de Samper” por el Ministerio de Cultura con motivo del centenario de su fallecimiento y con el propósito de rescatar del olvido su amplia, variada y relevante obra.
